Ancient Egyptian
A linguistic introduction
by
Antonio Loprieno
This book traces the language from Old Egyptian of
the 3rd millennium BCE to the Classical period of the Middle Kingdom (referred to in this
book as existing between 2000-1750 BCE), and finally culminating with the Late Middle
Egyptian of religious texts and the emerging with the New Kingdom (referred to here as
being 1500-1000 BCE).
There is also a discussion of cursive hieroglyphic
systems later to be know as Hieratic and Demotic.
Professor Loprieno also compares the genetic
connections of the Egyptian scripts with the Afroasiatic family. He looks at the Semitic
languages (Akkadian, Arabic, and Hebrew) and their relation ships to their Egyptian
origins.
