English Language Translations of Genesis

How do we read what we read, and understand what was meant? We ask Him, and He tells us. But, if we just read it, then there will be confusion trying to determine who's words are right, and who's words are correct.

Genesis 1:1, 2
Genesis 1:1-2
In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. 2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
KJV
Genesis 1:1-2
In the beginning, when God created the universe,2 the earth was formless and desolate. The raging ocean that covered everything was engulfed in total darkness, and the Spirit of God was moving over the water.
TEV
Genesis 1:1-2
1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
NIV
Genesis 1:1-2
1 In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth,2 the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters.
NRSV
