Installation System Requirements

General Notes

ezSCROLL™ Hotkey

The ezSCROLL Hotkey provides a convenient way of navigating the host desktop PC. However, the hotkey selected can affect the normal functionality of the key when used on the host machine:

Security

pcANYWHERE EXPRESS does not support symmetric or public-key encryption. However, users can still connect successfully to a pcANYWHERE32 host with pcANYWHERE encryption enabled.

Startup Parameters

When customizing pcANYWHERE EXPRESS using the "Host = " parameter, type the computer name or IP address of the pcANYWHERE host you wish to connect to. Polling a subnet (ex. entering a value 127.2.3.255) does not currently function.

When specifying the HelpURL startup parameter, be sure to give the full URL path of the HTML file being referenced.  For example:
    PAWRem.HelpURL = "http://<your website>/help.htm"

Host Configuration

If the pcANYWHERE host uses a user definable host name, manually typing in the host name on the remote will not allow the user to connect.  Use the mouse to select the desired host from the host list instead. If the pcANYWHERE Host name does not allow a connection to be made, try using the IP address of the Host.

pcANYWHERE EXPRESS remotes do not support pcANYWHERE32 Gateways.

pcANYWHERE EXPRESS remotes do not support pcANYWHERE32 Host Conferencing. pcANYWHERE32 conferencing hosts waiting for a connection are not visible to the pcANYWHERE EXPRESS remote.

NT Authentication

pcANYWHERE EXPRESS remotes do not display a separate Domain field when connecting to a Windows NT host using NT Authentication. To enter the Domain, enter the domain name before the login name as follows:
                        <domain name>\<username>

Remote Control

Online toolbar tooltips are not displayed when connected to a pcANYWHERE host in full screen mode.

pcANYWHERE EXPRESS ActiveX Control

General

Connecting to a web page whose pcANYWHERE EXPRESS ActiveX Control object size is larger than the pcANYWHERE host video resolution may cause unpredictable results, including displaying video incorrectly and locking-up the browser.

pcANYWHERE EXPRESS Netscape Plugin

General

Connecting to a web page whose embedded pcANYWHERE EXPRESS Netscape Plugin size is larger than the pcANYWHERE host video resolution may cause unpredictable results, including displaying video incorrectly and locking-up the browser.

Netscape Navigator

An embedded plugin does not return to its original size within Netscape when using the "Reduce Host Desktop" feature.  It will resize to the remote user's desktop area.

In Netscape 4.0, if a user selects a hyperlink pointing to the file NPAWREM.DLL, the extension of the filename to be saved changes to .EXE. User must manually change the extension back to .DLL before placing in the plugins directory.

Microsoft Internet Explorer

Web designers wishing to embed the pcANYWHERE EXPRESS Netscape Plugin so that Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.02 users can run it must do the following:
  When embedding the pcANYWHERE EXPRESS Netscape Plugin, use the src="test.chf" command in HTML, instead of the customary use of  type="application/x-pcanywhere-remote" to specify the MIME type.

pcANYWHERE EXPRESS Java Client

Java Virtual Machine (VM)

The pcANYWHERE EXPRESS Java Client requires a Java VM that supports the JDK 1.1 specification. It has been our experience that both Microsoft and Netscape release frequent updates for their respective Java VMs. Although updating to the latest Java VM is generally recommended, these updates may modify the behavior of the Java VM and introduce problems with the operation of the pcANYWHERE EXPRESS Java Client. The pcANYWHERE EXPRESS Java Client has been tested using the following Java Virtual Machines (VMs):

Netscape Navigator (JDK 1.1 Release patch)	http://help.netscape.com/smartupdate.html
Microsoft Internet Explorer (VM Version 2339)	http://www.microsoft.com/java/

You may experience problems if you are not using one of the above Java VMs. Make sure your Internet browser is capable of running Java applications that use JDK 1.1 before running pcANYWHERE EXPRESS Java Client.

Netscape Navigator

Java scripts do not function in Netscape 4.04 using the released version of JDK 1.1.

In Netscape 4.04, using Internet browser buttons (such as Stop, Refresh, Home) while in a pcANYWHERE session will cause the session to abnormally disconnect.  The pcANYWHERE Java applet will also disconnect if you minimize or resize the browser window.

You may experience the whole pcANYWHERE EXPRESS Java Client display area flash while using the scroll bars or the ezScroll(tm) feature.

Microsoft Internet Explorer

You may experience the whole pcANYWHERE EXPRESS Java Client display area flash while using the scroll bars or the ezScroll(tm) feature.

Switching back to Internet Explorer while in Full Screen Mode causes the browser to display over the remote session. Minimize the browser to restore the Full Screen display.

Other Operating Systems

Some limited testing was done using the Preview Releases of Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 (Preview Release 1) and Netscape Navigator 4.03 (Java AWT1.1 Preview Release 1) for both the Macintosh and Solaris Operating Systems. On these Operating Systems, the pcANYWHERE EXPRESS Java Client is limited to the "sandbox" security model.  This means that the Java remote will only connect to a pcANYWHERE host located on the Web Server where the Java applet and Web .HTM Page is located.  In addition, no remote disk caching or clipboard transfer is allowed.

When using Netscape Communicator 4.03 Java AWT 1.1 (preview release 1) on Solaris 2.5.1, the following issues were noted:

• Full Screen mode does not function properly
• Hide scroll bar button does not function properly
• The current JavaScript example (jscript.htm) does not function correctly.

Testing was performed on various international platforms and Internet browser software.   The results of this testing is listed below:

General Notes (International)

• The "Host Screen Blank" feature is not supported on PC-98XX machines.
• When requesting a list of pcANYWHERE hosts to connect to, high-ASCII characters in the pcANYWHERE host name are not displayed (for example, "Ñ" is displayed as "N")
• Switching to "Full Screen" mode while connected to a pcANYWHERE host may cause unpredictable results on PC-98XX machines.
• There is a keyboard incompatibility when connecting a DOS/V host and PC-98XX host.   Within a Windows "DOS Box", remote keypad keystrokes do not correspond to host keys.  Setting the host keypad's NUMLOCK key corrects this problem.  The equal, comma and underscore keys are not translated to host keys as well.
• Currently, the user is unable to control the IME on the host system.

pcANYWHERE EXPRESS ActiveX Control / Netscape Plugin (International)

• The "Host Mouse Tracking" feature is not fully supported using the ActiveX Control or Plugin and may cause unpredictable results.

pcANYWHERE EXPRESS Java Applet (International)

• In addition to having problems diplaying a host containing high-ASCII characters, users may experience problems connecting to a host containing high-ASCII characters with the Java Applet.
