The Web

There are many concerns for developing an Inter/Intranet solution for business, as well as personal use.

In business, we tend to need information which we can translate into dollars and cents for either our corporate or domestic bosses. This information must help us

  1. Define - Explain the needs and justification for committing resources to these projects.
  2. Refine - Clarify the goals and manage customer expectation(s) of the results. And, the measurements (ROI) that we use to gauge our success.

As a World Wide Web (WWW) developer or user, we must task ourselves to become analyzers of the information that we use and distribute. The goals of this task are to provide a competitive edge and/or to improve our personal performance in achieving our goals. A simple model could be.

  1. Capture
  2. Communicate
  3. Access and Evaluate
  4. Assign and Act On
  5. Change and Results

The last set, Change and Results, is not the end but the beginning of the series of events. this step provides the feedback mechanism and the initial inputs for step 1, CAPTURE!

The Model

This is one of many steps / tasks that are outlined in the Malcolm Baldrige model. These steps should also map back to your strategic plans, be they business or personal. The Baldrige model comprises 28 examination items distributed among seven categories:

  1. Leadership;
  2. Information and Analysis;
  3. Strategic Quality Planning;
  4. Human Resource Development and Management;
  5. Management of Process Quality;
  6. Quality and Operational Results; and
  7. Customer Focus and Satisfaction.

Information and Analysis is an extremely important step when starting on the intra/internet journey.

The Circular Journey

There are ways to achieve you expected goals. Dr. Walter A. Shewhart decided that this circle should consist of:

PLAN
ACT
data knowledge
results action
DO
CHECK

The Leadership

In order to effectively follow through with the Baldrige and Shewhart models, you must select the right:

  1. Team
  2. Project
  3. Vision

A sound vision requires a sound project to make itself known. A sound project needs a sound team to implement the project's intended vision.

People are more likely to understand, implement and use the vision(s) and their system(s) if:

  1. They understand the vision, project, and goals.
  2. It makes them more effective in their activities (work and/or play).

The Background and Shadows

In the background, we must workout the people, trust, and control issues in a friendly environment. This will help us to move away from the collection of Equally Empowered Feudal Fiefdoms with their politically isolated departments and profit centers toward a Client/Server Enterprise Vision.

This new model for the enterprise needs to be made up of integrated, self-managed teams. The teams need to focus on a common vision, mission, and set of business objectives. We can MORE FULLY appreciate this when we begin to understand that this model works for both our commercial (corporate) and domestic (home) lives.
