MicroSoft 98 Beta

This is a small set of Gott Chas in the Beta 98 product. For a complete list please do not hesitate to go to the MS FrontPage site and review the on-line Beta Support page.. While it does have a few good features, which are worth while using, it is not completly compatable with the previous versions of FP. So, for the seriuos user, if your ISP does not support and does not plan to support FP 98, you should create a copy of your web site locally to use the present version of the product.

Some of the new features in FP 98 will require you to install IE 4.0, but the retail version will soon be available. THe non-retail version(s) can be a bit quarky if you system is not properly equiped or configured (memory and harddisk space). If you can, upgrade your memory to at least 32mg, this will kepp you from running out of system resources.

bulletRenaming Folders - You may rename folders in-place in the FrontPage 98 Client, but the links to pages in the renamed folders (and their subfolders) will not be updated automatically by the FrontPage 1.1 Server Extensions. These will become broken hyperlinks and will appear as such in the FrontPage 98 Client after the rename. Additionally, you may not delete folders when using the FrontPage 98 Client with the FrontPage 1.1 Server Extensions.
bulletActive Elements and FrontPage - Active Elements and FrontPage components in a FrontPage 98 Web page will remain intact when that page is opened using the FrontPage 97 Client.  These elements, however, will appear in the FrontPage 97 Editor as Java applets or WebBot components and most will not be supported by the same custom user interface (that appears when editing them using the FrontPage 98 Client).
bulletUsing Themes - When you open a FrontPage 98 "Themed" page using the FrontPage 97 Client, this page will appear "un-Themed" in the FrontPage 97 Editor, but if you open that same page in a Web browser (using the FrontPage 97 Client's Preview in Browser feature), you will see that the page's Theme remains intact. If you wish to modify the FrontPage 98 Theme settings (across an entire FrontPage 98 Web site or on any individual Web page), you will need to do so using the FrontPage 98 Client.
bulletDiscussion Groups - Reported from zdnet.com - According to BugNet - The three bugs have not yet been placed in Microsoft's Knowledge Base. However,
bulletThe first glitch occurs when creating a "discussion Web." FrontPage 98 provides the option of sorting postings from oldest to most recent or vice versa. However, according to BugNet, FrontPage developers said the actual runtime code for the Discussion Wizard doesn't support the setting, and future editions of the software will not include the option.
bulletThe second problem affects existing discussions when the hosting company upgrades its FrontPage server extensions from the 97 to the
98 version. In that case, the posting order will become inconsistent.

 Microsoft FrontPage 97

Hello. I have been getting many inquires about the FrontPage beta.

Unfortunately, the beta for Windows has expired because there is now a release available. But, if you are using the MAC platform (Apple), then you can still get a beta copy from Microsoft's Site Builder web site.

This page has:

  1. Tips

  2. Front Page 97 Beta 3 for quick download (expired January 31 1997).

You may pick one of these for quick setup. Remember this is not a mirror site, it is only to help you get started quickly.

However, for the latest version(s) and plug-ins, goto to Microsoft's FrontPage .
